French Composer/Producer Serge Colbert commissioned me to produce with him “Cinemaster Series 2012”. Another wonderful opportunity to travel abroad and record at the world renown Rudolfinum Concert Hall in Prague. Executive Producer Alexandre Pisani Winckelmann and Serge were fantastic to work with navigating and coordinating the complexity of a trip this size. The mix was done at Impact Music’s private studio, Le Cabanon, in the stunningly beautiful Villefranche Sur-Mer on the French Rivera. I know, I know, I mixed a record in the south of France over looking the Mediterranean Sea. I am crucially aware of how amazing this was….
When I finished setting up my ProTools rig that I had shipped over to France with all my presets, plug ins, custom settings and sounds at my disposal, Serge and I sat down to map out the production of the mix. His main concern was for the music to live up to the name of his and Alex’s company. He told me, a few times honestly, that the music had to have IMPACT and I should do whatever it takes to achieve that ideal. Well, Serge’s writing had the all impact, I just helped him realize it by choosing where the focus of each piece should be and creating whatever the production needed. At times it was adding percussion, designing powerful sounds to support the piece sonically, or building up the power of the track by suggesting arrangement choices.
Much of my method is about intuitively understanding what the composers intent was when he or she was writing it and forging a path directly to it. When that wasn’t enough, I didn’t stop trying new techniques till the mix hit you like a hammer… a big hammer.
